Scope
Work Group 11 ePrescribing & Related Transactions develops standardized messages for prescribers, pharmacists, payers and/or other interested parties to exchange information related to a prescribing event or patient encounter.
Goals
- Promote NCPDP membership, attendance and active participation in work group and task group meetings.
- Promote NCPDP membership to achieve balanced representation of industry segments, sufficient to develop highly efficient communication standards for the transmission of healthcare information.
- Promote the adoption of all message types and standards created by this work group including but not limited to the NCPDP SCRIPT Standard, NCPDP Formulary and Benefit Standard and NCPDP Specialized Standard.
- Review Data Element Request Forms (DERFs) and adjudicate ballots pertaining to standards for which this work group is responsible.
- Monitor industry practices with respect to electronic prescribing on federal and state levels. Coordinate with staff and the MC Maintenance and Control Education, Legislation and Regulations Task Group when legislation or regulations regarding issues relevant to the work groups are available for comment or best practice guidance.
- Provide education to the healthcare industry and other interested parties about the benefits of using the NCPDP Standards. Provide input to NCPDP Staff for the “ePrescribing” website page and the ePrescribing Fact Sheet.
- Provide guidance for implementation of the above NCPDP Standards.
- Provide guidance for implementation of structured and codified Sig in the SCRIPT Standard.
- Monitor activities and continue working with state and federal entities such as National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS), Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ASTP/ONC), National Institute of Standards and Testing (NIST), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMP) as they affect WG11. Initiatives include but are not limited to:
- SCRIPT
- Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substance (EPCS) Prescriptions
- RxNorm
- Formulary & Benefit
- Relevant legislation as applicable to the SCRIPT Standard
- Continue collaboration with other domestic and international organizations and participate in Standards Development Organization (SDO) activities as they affect WG11.
- Continue to collaborate with other work groups addressing the needs in electronic prescribing.
- Collaborate with WG9 Government Programs in identifying and implementing streamlined, innovative and viable electronic solutions for PDMP requirements.
- Monitor WG11 task groups to ensure they are tracking scope, goals and deliverables. Disband task groups that have completed their work.
- Analyze, develop and execute webinar opportunities for WG11 standards in coordination with Education Programs staff.
- Foster increased participation in WG11 in the following membership categories:
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturers
- Prescribers
- Software Vendors
- Specialty and Compounding Pharmacies
